The Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) was an annual engineering college entrance examination in India. It was used as the sole admission test by the fifteen Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian School of Mines (also known as ISM Dhanbad) and IIT BHU. The examination was organised each year by one of the various IITs, using a round robin rotation pattern. It had a very low admission rate (about 10,000 in 500,000 in 2011).

PREFACE The Department of Education in Science and Mathematics (DESM), National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT),INDIA, initiated the development of ‘Exemplar Problems’ in science and mathematics for secondary and higher secondary stages after completing the preparation of textbooks based on National Curriculum Framework – 2005. The main objective of the book on ‘Exemplar Problems in Physics’ is to provide the teachers and students a large number of quality problems with varying cognitive levels to facilitate teaching-learning of concepts in physics that are presented through the textbook for Class XI. It is envisaged that the problems included in this volume would help the teachers to design tasks to assess effectiveness of their teaching and to know about the achievement of their students besides facilitating preparation of balanced question papers for unit and terminal tests. The feedback based on the analysis of students’ responses may help the teachers in further improving the quality of classroom instructions. In addition, the problems given in this book are also expected to help the teachers to perceive the basic characteristics of good quality questions and motivate them to frame similar questions on their own. Students can benefit themselves by attempting the exercises given in the book for self assessment and also in mastering the basic techniques of problem solving. Some of the questions given in the book are expected to challenge the understanding of the concepts of physics of the students and their ability to apply them in novel situations.

LOS SECRETOS DEL LUGAR QUE FORMÓ AL PRIMER "Nobel de matemática" latinoamericano IMPA BRASIL

El INMPA fue fundado en 1952.
En el lugar de Brasil donde se formó el primer "Nobel de matemática" latinoamericano, los cursos se dan gratis y sin prerrequisitos, hay alumnos de maestría que ni completaron secundaria, las huelgas "no existen" y un número en discusión es cuántos goles lleva convertidos un profesor.
Rodeado por la exuberante vegetación tropical de Río de Janeiro, lejos del ruido de la gran ciudad, el Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura y Aplicada (IMPA) es una suerte de meca regional de esta ciencia formal, que enseña del modo más informal posible.
El nombre del IMPA ha recorrido el mundo en los últimos días, después que Artur Ávila, un brasileño que se doctoró en él a los 21 años, ganara el premio más prestigioso en matemática: la Medalla Fields, conocida como "el Nobel de matemática".
"Es el primer ganador de una Medalla Fields con una formación integral, hasta hacer el doctorado, en un país en vías de desarrollo", explica César Camacho, un peruano-brasileño que dirige el IMPA y que estuvo en Seúl cuando le dieron el premio a Ávila.
"Esto acaba siendo también un reconocimiento para el IMPA", agrega.
Pero, ¿cuáles son los secretos de este instituto donde cerca de la mitad de los alumnos son extranjeros, en su mayoría latinoamericanos?

Quatro Medalhas Brasileiras Na Olimpíada Cone Sul

Hoje, 20 de agosto de 2014, foi divulgado o resultado da Olimpíada Matemática do Cone Sul. A Olimpíada Cone Sul é uma competição internacional da qual países são representados por equipes de 4 estudantes que não tenham feito 16 anos de idade em 31 de dezembro do ano imediatamente anterior à celebração da Olimpíada. A Olimpíada este ano aconteceu no Uruguai.
O resultado brasileiro foi:

Spacewalking Cosmonaut Tosses Tiny Satellite Into Space for PERU (Video)-SATELITE CHASQUI


A Russian cosmonaut threw a tiny satellite into the vacuum of space during a spacewalk outside the International Space Station today (Aug. 18).
Cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev threw the Peruvian nanosatellite from the space station about 22 minutes after the spacewalk began at 10:02 a.m. EDT (1402 GMT). His fellow spacewalking cosmonaut, Alexander Skvortsov, took photos of the Chasqui 1 nanosatellite release. NASA broadcast live video of Artemyev tossing the satellite into space during the spacewalk.
The tiny satellite — which measures 4 inches by 4 inches by 4 inches (10 centimeters) and weighs 2.2 lbs (1 kilogram) — is designed to take photos of Earth in infrared and visible light, according to NASA officials. [See photos of the Casqui-1 satellite deployment]

Artur Avila is a Brazilian mathematician who has contributed to a number of fields. Some of his most notable research is in the study of chaos theory and dynamical systems. These areas seek to understand the behavior of systems that evolve over time in which very small changes in initial conditions can lead to wildly varying outcomes, such as weather patterns, as typified in the classic example of a butterfly's wings flapping leading to a change in weather hundreds of miles away. One of Avila's major contributions to this field of study was in clarifying that a certain broad class of dynamical systems fall into one of two categories.
