Os fractais são formas geométricas de dimensão fracionária. Eles servem como ferramenta para: descrever as formas irregulares da superfície da terra; modelar fenômenos, aparentemente imprevisíveis (teoria do caos), de natureza meteorológica, astronômica, econômica, biológica, etc. Os fractais permitem desenhar (ou modelar) qualquer coisa (ou fenômeno) da natureza numa tela de computador (computação gráfica), tudo isto graças a álgebra dos números complexos.
