Peruvian students have proved their math excellence yet again after they won two gold and two silver medals at the 27 Olimpiada de Matemática del Cono Sur (Southern Cone Math Olympiad). From May 2-7, four Peruvians battled it out against other students from the region in Vicente Lopez, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The students, coming from Saco Oliveros school, earned a total of 199 points to become the crowned champions. Daniel Julián Rojas Cruz and Jemisson Daniel Coronel Baldeón, both 16 years old, won the gold medal. While Daniel Marcelo Benavides Quispialaya (14) and Raúl Alfredo Alcántara Castillo (16), won the silver.
Given three questions per day for two days, the students had four hours each day to conclude the challenging equations. At the conclusion of the event, the four Peruvian students had occupied the first to fourth place positions due to individual merit. According to an event spokesperson, this is the first time a country has reached this achievement. Considering these results, Peru is the leader in the South American Olympics in math, against students from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Bolivia and Uruguay.
